Architectural design is more than just creating buildings; it‘s about shaping communities and transforming lives.

For Kate, returning to the University of Newcastle as a mature-age student was a decision fuelled by her lifelong passion for architecture and her desire to make a meaningful impact. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) to bring her passion to life.

“My journey at the University of Newcastle has been incredibly positive. The flexibility of part-time study allowed me to balance family life while pursuing my dream career,” she said.

Kate attributes her enriched learning to hands-on experiences, such as designing gardens for a school in Cairns. “These experiences are not just academic achievements; they‘re stepping stones towards my ultimate goal—becoming a registered architect with a focus on social housing and urban design. I know that my time here is preparing me for a future where I can make a real difference.”

Kate to advantage of the state-of-the-art learning facilities, including the MakerSpace, which she says enabled her to make things beyond her imagination.

“The degree was fantastic because we are challenged to think outside of the box, and the staff were all really passionate about what they were teaching us.”

While Kate is still exploring the path her career will take, she plans to pursue either residential design or urban design upon completing her studies.
